Self-Portraits 2013 - 2021

I work on self-portraits sporadically, and they are always a genre I return too, partly because the self is consistently there, and a convenient model to work through ideas, whether it is compositionally or using different materials but also as a way of dealing with myself and emotions. I often end up with either ‘dark’ or slightly parodying portraits of myself, I guess, due to inner angst that is not necessarily obvious to the outer world. They might be recognisable as portraits of me to other people in terms of visual recognition but not necessarily how others may ‘see’ me. When you make a self-portrait it is a way of expressing something personal, about you and about your work – it can also be a way of becoming someone else (should the artist choose to).
