A classic of sixties British comedy films Fenella might never have been in the lead role but her screen presence could never be ignored, she frequently stole the scenes, with her enigmatic charm, distinctive voice and seductive expression. For this project I wanted to paint her voice, her presence, her humour and style. I wanted to capture the characters she was renowned for, the upper class siren, naughty sexual vamp and the ever cheeky innuendo comedian. I hope the viewer can hear, feel, recognise and ultimately relate to her in these works. I believe she had a charm and presence that enthralled audiences even though she was not the main character – I wanted to give her the lead, if you like, in these paintings, celebrating that sexy charisma, that alluring and conspiratorial way she had with the viewer.
